Catholic Word

  of the Week

A solemn agreement

between human beings

or between God and a

human being involving

mutual commitments

and guarantees. The

Bible refers to God’s

covenants with Noah,

Abraham, and Moses

as leader of the chosen

people, Israel. In the Old

Testament or Covenant,

God revealed his law

through Moses and

prepared his people for

salvation through the

prophets. In the New

Testament or Covenant,

Christ established a new

and eternal covenant

through his own sacrificial

death and Resurrection. …..

which will never pass away

and no new public revelation

is to be expected before the

glorious manifestation of our

Lord Jesus Christ.

(CCC#56, 62, 66)

The people were filled with expectation,
and all were asking in their hearts
whether John might be the Christ.
John answered them all, saying,
"I am baptizing you with water,
but one mightier than I is coming.
I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals.
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire."

Luke 3:15-16
